Statement
My work is primarily conceptual. Often with content that is socially aware and existential, focusing on minorities and individuality. I’m interested in examining the role of the gaze in photography, as a photograph for me is like a go-between for the viewer and the artist. I choose the motif and the composition, while the viewer consciously or unconsciously chooses what is seen. Through this ‘collaboration,’ I hope that I’m able to challenge the viewer, so that more than just the obvious comes to light.
In Naevus Flammeus, I extend the ‘collaboration’ to include the one being portrayed. Due to the natural size of the portrait, as well as the intense and steady gaze of the person being portrayed, I attempt to hold the viewers’ gaze so they are forced to see more than just the deformity that is so apparent in the image. The person in the portrait emerges and becomes first and foremost a person, after which the deformity becomes secondary.
In Linda Hansen, which is a series of portraits of women named Linda Hansen, attention is also paid to holding the viewers’ gaze. One sees and becomes interested in each woman, instead of just looking at an unknown person with the seemingly regular name – Linda Hansen.
In Life in Plastic, I strive to capture the viewer in a state of double awareness, via images of very used and unused plastic animals. I want to bring the toy animals to life, in order to evoke thoughts of the ‘lives’ of the animals that when looking at how disfigured and worn out they are, were clearly loved and cherished.
The process and notion of crumbling and cracking occupies me greatly in my artistic practice. The facial birthmarks in Naevus Flammeus, the peeling of the plastic animals in Life in Plastic, or the marks that life has made in the Linda Hansen series. To me, crumbling and cracking is beautiful. It is these small or larger blemishes, which help to give our lives individuality and content.
I am currently working on a variety of projects. One of them: why NOT me, which has its origins in a long-term self-portrait project. Here, I show images of myself over a number of years, without filter and with the stories, life experience, marks and scars that I have accumulated along the way.
